I eventually decided on one of the 3Com PalmPilots, the IIIx seemed to be the best choice due to it's increased memory (4MB as opposed to 2MB on other models) and lower cost than the Palm V.
Good Points
Bad Points
With the IrDA update installed, the Palm will talk to my Ericsson SH888, and with additional software installed for mail retrival, is a very compact portable email solution. Currently I use either TopGun Postman or ProxiMail (based on TG Postman) to send and receive mail. TG Telnet and TG ssh provide secure connectivity to Unix systems.
Other software I use includes Launcher III as a shell replacement, and HackMaster with MenuHack for increased usability.
I originally purchased a Targus case for my Palm, however this case is badly designed and the cutouts designed to hold the PalmIII either covered part of the screen, the area used for grafitti input, or the buttons on the bottom of the case depending upon positioning, necessitating removal of the Palm III from the case before use. It also made removal of the stylus very difficult. Other than these (in my opinion) major problems, the rest of the case is generally good, providing space for a set of spare batteries and business/credit cards. However, due to the major problems with the usability of this case, I cannot recommend it to anyone.
To replace the Targus case I purchased a Palm Accessories 10121U case. Slightly smaller in size than the Targus case, this relies on velcro to hold the Palm to the case. Whilst this involves sticking Velcro to the back of the Palm, this isn't a major problem, and does provide unrestricted access to the Palm allowing it's use without removal from the case. The case provides a slot down the inside of the spine to hold the stylus, solving one of the major problems with the Targus case. The case also contains slots for credit/business cards.
